On Thursday March 16 2023, the DWC hosted “A Community Conversation on Climate Change: Action & Hope” at the Cabrillo College Horticulture Building. Featured speakers were State Senator John Laird and two panels including: Dr. Gary Griggs, Sarah Newkirk, Sacha Lozano, Dr. Tiffany Wise West, Alex Yasbek, Felicia Van Stolk, Justin Cummings, and a student from the Cabrillo Environmental Program. Both panels were in good hands with our facilitator, Donna Meyers, a former mayor of Santa Cruz whose 25+career has focused on water quality protection, coastal resource and watershed management, and coastal land restoration and protection.
Central Coast Community Energy, 4/29/23
Central Coast Community Energy (3CE), is your local, community-owned electricity provider. The presenters included the new CEO of 3CE Rob Shaw who shared a slideshow about the agency, and Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce McPherson and his Aide and former Executive Director of Ecology Action Gina Johnson, both of whom played key roles in establishing 3CE to provide more renewable energy at cheaper prices to Central Coast communities. They will discuss the progress of 3CE in meeting these goals.

In honor of Affordable Housing Month, the DWC focused our May program on progress related to housing individuals and families in need of affordable housing.

On May 11 Santa Cruz Water Director Rosemary Menard presented “Securing our Water Future”. Menard will addressed questions such as: Where will the water come from for all of the affordable and workforce housing that the City is building and planning? Aren’t we facing drought shortages?
